9 - Calling on the Asean to mediate for a Peaceful Reconciliation

Date: Aug 1, 2006

Military Alliance
Statement

The so-called Union of Burma is consisted of 7 Burmese Division and 7 Ethnic States. Around 60% of the land mass and 40% of the country's population belongs to the non-Burmese People. The consecutive Burmese military dictators aggressive policies to dominate and burmanize the non-Burmese led to prolong war and conflicts, which have been lasting for more than half a century. For self defense, every ethnic group had formed their own armed group.

Although the junta declared, more than 17 major and many more minor groups had surrendered and had entered governments legal fold, there are many more armed groups, still waging war against the Burma Army. Those said to be in the governments legal fold still bearing their arms, because the truce lack mutual trust or guarantee for the future. The detaining of cease-fire leaders has proven that there is no true peace in Burma.

The detaining of political oppositions, like Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Khun Htun Oo and other Ethnic political leaders had proven that there is the political instability.

The Governments economic policies also become an economic disaster, leaving the whole populace in an un-contempt state.

The presence of various armed groups, the detention of political rivals, indicated that there is a potential danger, a time-bomb ready to explode in any moment.

Therefore, we the Military Alliance, namely KNPP, RCSS, KNO call upon the Asean to take immediate action against the military junta. Take every possible means to defuse the time-bomb and pave way to peace, freedom and democracy in the so-called Union of Burma.
