Dear Sirs,
On behalf of Global Shan Community and Shan peoples in Burma I would like to thank members of the UN Security Council for putting Burma on the agenda for future debates.
We see a glimmer of hope as this move indicates that the majority members do care for the progress of Mankind and have placed the importance of humanity before politics and economy. We are grateful to know that you feel for the victims who are living in fear and terror.
My parents were the first generation to have suffered at the hands of the military regime and now it is the fourth generation and the Shan people are still going through the same or even worse experience of violence, torture and death.
The Burmese Dictatorial Military regime is taking advantage of its position and power to treat its citizens most abominably. The Colonels and their officers have forgotten that these citizens are human beings just like them.
In the Shan and Karen State there are countless children who have been the victims of violence, whose lives are scarred by the memory of witnessing their parents being tortured and murdered by the soldiers, and the shock of being left fatherless and motherless. In other parts of Burma children are forced to become boy soldiers, and through and through indoctrination become part of the system that turned them into people who are capable of terrible deeds. Generation after generation of children have become the victims of mistrust and hate, when they should be having proper education and learning to reason and to have compassion for other people.
I am sorry that China, Russia, Qatar and Congo voted against other members of the Security Council to put Burma on the agenda. I would like to believe that you, sirs, would not feel so indifferent to the human suffering if you knew what terrible acts the military regime in Burma is capable of committing. I would like to plead with you to please reconsider your opinion on the situation in Burma and to stop making excuses for the military regimes. Please have compassion for the citizens of Burma, especially the innocent children.
The members of the UN Security Council, the most powerful leaders of the world are working to improve global economy and politics; we hope that all of you have the same vision for the welfare, happiness and freedom of man in every corner of the globe. The victims of human rights violations belong to the same human species as you and me, regardless of race, colour or religion.
Sao Noan Oo
On behalf of Global Shan Community and Shan Peoples in Burma
