Mr Kofi Annan,
Secretary General to the United Nations
United Nations, U.N. Plaza, New York 10017, USA

Date: 19th June 2006

Dear Mr. Kofi Annan,

Re: Ethnic Peoples in Burma

I am writing to you in the hope that you will use your personal human conscience for the sake of the survival of humanity and a better and safer world to act on behalf of all the suffering ethnic peoples in Burma.

I am writing to you because I am extremely concerned for the survival of all the ethnic peoples of Burma who are suffering terrible atrocities, torture, rape, killings, persecution, racial discrimination, forced labour, forced displacement, imprisonment without fair trial and other crimes committed by the Burmese Military Regime.

I am extremely concerned for the survival of these poor helpless peoples of Burma.

I understand that you will not address Burma’s issues because China, Russia and Japan are against it. They had said they do not want to be involved with Burma’s internal problems.

It is understandable that these countries use that excuse to be callous and uncaring.

To start with, China and Russia do not have impeccable human rights records so how can they care about the ethnic peoples of Burma?  China has a vested interest in Burma’s natural resources, and Russia is selling arms and military training to the Regime.  Japan also are following China’s example for her own selfish aims.

Burma is a unique country.  It is a nation of different races and nationalities.  Each ethnic group has their own language and traditions.  The Burmese Military Regime is a chauvinistic and racist government.  They do not give the ethnic peoples basic human rights and they are totally and cruelly discriminated against.

I desperately would like to know why a powerful organisation like the United Nations Security Council is playing into the whims of such unethical nations.

Please correct me, if I am mistaken, but is the job of the United Nations Security Council to protect the helpless and suffering peoples of the world?

What example are we setting for our children if we do not act on our human conscience, to know and teach them what is right and what is wrong?

Is there any hope for a better future and safer world if we are going to turn a blind eye on the people who are being abused by other people?

If we do not use our human conscience, we have not progressed at all since the time of the Nazis.

If we are being allowed to be dictated by unethical nations, I am afraid there is no hope for the survival of ethical nations, let alone an ethical global society.

Mr. Annan, even if you and I do not share the same point of view, I beg you to please use your human conscience and compassion to do all that you can to help the poor suffering ethnic peoples of Burma.

Yours sincerely,

Feraya Nangmone
